Redesign of maxdome,
the biggest German VoD

Maxdome asked us to help them redesign their TV app. There weren’t happy with current version and they were working on the new one. When we joined in-house team the basics of new product had been already defined. Our job was to review it and help them improve UX, create concepts of the new features and prototype the app for further testing. We spent one week at maxdome headquarter in Munich on workshops and another 6 months working remotely.

Discovery phase

Before we joined the project, in-house team on maxdome side together with third-party UX agency did excellent job on user research. They had conducted user testing sessions and collected lots of feedback. They shared the results with us which helped us find weak spots on the app and define spaces where improvements are necessary. We’ve prepared rich UX audit and presented a discovery document that highlighted our proposed solutions.

Wireframes

During our work we have prepared more then one hundred wireframes for crucial screens of the app such us movies, asset details, search etc. We were discussing all the wireframes on regular meetings. The most promising screens where prototyped (either lo- or hi-fidelity) in Framer for further user testing.


Prototypes

Before we’ve joined the team, they tried to prototype concepts in Axure. However, due to complexity of project performance of these prototypes were very poor, there were difficult to build and modify and it was impossible to get reliable experience. That’s why we decided to switch to Framer as a main prototyping tool. It allowed us to run prototypes on TV screen and use gamepad and remote controller to navigate through them. We were able to conduct regular user testing in very hi-fidelity environment.

Interactions

Micro interactions are important element which affects UX because they help to deliver consistent experience and invisibly guides user through the app. However, designing them for TV screen is tricky because of older devices performance. We’ve prepared dozens of interactions concepts on different level of fidelity and we were working closely with developers on its implementation to find best solution.
